woest en waardig, in wilde draf,
hooggehoornd, heet op strijd.

Dalen dreunden, gedruis weerklonk,
woest geloei uit wijde muil,
stekend en stotend, steig’rend en snuivend,
door merg en been, brul en galm.

Het hert klom omhoog, de heuvelen op,
heer op de heide, in het hart der Veluwe,
de rode bulderaar baste luid,
